To Thine Heart Be True

Once I started to let go in my life, I realized that my thoughts, words and actions are controlled less and less by the egoic mind but now more often take direction from my Higher Self.

Last week I was feeling off about something. I didn’t feel quite right and I wasn’t really sure why. So, I decided to look within for an explanation.  I’m learning to listen to subtlety of my inner voice. I took the time to ask some contemplative questions and do some meditation. Then, I realized that I was off course slightly in some areas of my life. My blog on Intuitive Eating talks about an example of this. My diet was one of the things in my life that was out of alignment. I listened to that quiet voice I normally would not give much attention. I was able to make some decisions about my diet that shifted me back to a more authentic place in this and many other areas of my life.

In a recent YouTube video, Teal Swan spoke about the challenges with the Law of Attraction (LOA). Or rather the challenges that come up when we misinterpret this law from our limited human perspective. This video is one of the most powerful videos I have seen done on the importance of connecting to our Higher Self. It speaks to the important need for all of us to connect to our inner voice.

We live in a society that does not value introspection, silence or slowing down. Sadly, our busy loud world disconnects us from our inner wisdom. I remember watching a TV show on young people and spirituality. They interviewed a young woman who choose to become a Nun. When asked why she choose that life she simply stated that the world was too loud and she could not hear God’s voice.

Teal Swan teaches that the LOA works for us in this reality not only at a temporal level but also at a higher level through our Higher Self. She explains that in this life we have two points of perceptive: our physical or egoic perspective and our higher perceptive. Teal states that we have life experiences that are a response to both these points of attraction. Your Higher Self is always aware of what your egoic self desires, but it is functioning at a much higher level of understanding. So, your Higher Self attracts things into your life that match your desires perfectly, but they may not be so obvious from our egoic perspective. From our egoic perspective, and it then may resist, or disallow, what your Higher Self has brought into your life.

We need to avoid judging that a negative experience as something that should not be happening to us if we want to avoid resistance. If our work to heal this unwanted experience does not seem to resolve our problem, Teal Swan asks us not to blame ourselves for not working things through correctly. Rather we need to connect to our Higher Self to gain a greater level of perspective on this seemingly unwanted event or circumstance.

When we approach the LOA from the place of our ego , the results we get may change not be what we had bargained for. Your Higher Self has a much more evolved understanding of what you desire than your ego does. Teal uses an example of someone desiring love. Higher Self is working to aid our spiritual growth and expansion, so, it may choose to attract an experience that is the complete opposite of love. This way the egoic self learns what love is not in order to comprehend what love really is. Our egoic self may judge that experience as bad. However, the bad experience, from the perspective of Higher Self is an exact match to what we wished to attract. If we are not tapped into our inner voice we may dismiss the value in that experience and lose out on the lesson it holds. A lesson that may well direct us towards the very thing we desire.

So, we may find ourselves facing things in our lives that are the opposite of what we intended. No matter how hard we work on changing our thoughts, words and actions a persistence problem or challenge may not be resolved. The goal we are trying to reach continues to stay out of our grasp. It seems at first glance that the LOA is a load of new age crap. Or if we fully accept the reality of the LOA we may blame ourselves for not being able to achieve the results we are looking for. If we judge something as unwanted we are in a state of resistance which creates suffering. When we approach the LOA from the place of our ego state, the results we get will not be what we had bargained for. Your Higher Self has a much more evolved understanding of what you desire then you do from your limited egoic perspective. Teal uses an example of someone desiring love. Higher Self is working to aid our spiritual growth and expansion. So, it may choose to attract an experience that is the complete opposite of love so the egoic self learns what love is not in order for them to comprehend what love really is and then go in that direction.

Our inner voice is the only thing that can show us the higher purpose for an undesired experience. It can help us to understand how this experience will steer us on the path to our desired life. Teal advises that we need to stop making assumptions about what should be happening in our lives from our ego perspective. Then we will understand that our true desire can come in the package of what we do not think we want. It can be a diamond in the rough.

Dr. Allan Hunter speaks about radical gratitude in a video on his book Gratitude and Beyond (watch here). This is the same concept that Teal Swan is discussing. That we need to be grateful for the seemingly negative circumstances in our lives, because they are our Higher Self at work. They are important steps on the path to our true happiness. Teal Swan calls the negative experience the venue through which the desire will be fulfilled. Dr. Hunter’s concept of showing gratitude for difficult circumstances is another way to shine the light of awareness on the negative experience and reveal it as our teacher; the catalyst for the change we need to truly get what we desire.

Teal teaches us to work through the idea that this unwanted circumstance is the result of something unhealed within us. We will then either resolve the negative experience or we will learn from our Higher perspective the true purpose of this experience and be able to embrace it without resistance. She shares “what is happening is what is supposed to be happening because it is happening.” It is our job to recognize this opportunity to heal and be open to the wisdom of our Higher Self.

The only way to really ever by true to yourself is to listen to that subtle voice that comes through silence and through our emotional guidance system. This is the voice of your heart. Your heart will never be false. If you listen to your inner voice you will gain a higher level of perspective on the events and challenges in your life. The path it offers is one of authenticity and happiness. Following the voice of your heart you can then work to attract the things, experiences and people into your life that will help you to create the truly authentic, happy life you are searching for.

This above all: to thine ownself be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.
– Shakespeare, Hamlet Act 1 Scene 3
